Christian Alliance on EU-Africa Conference in Lisbon

"Save Zimbabwe"

concerning the situation in Zimbabwe on the occasion of the EU-Africa Summit in Lisbon (8./9. December 2007)

The Zimbabwe Network unreservedly supports the Munich Statement of the München-Harare-Partnership and ESS-München and the appeal of the Christian Alliance (CA), a church-based ecumenical network in Zimbabwe, which has, together with numerous civic society groups, founded the "Save Zimbabwe Campaign".

Appeal of the Christian Alliance, Zimbabwe:

For us in Zimbabwe, the EU-Africa summit is taking place at a time when we are going through an unprecedented crisis and turmoil. The people in our country are suffering under
  • Extremely restrictive and repressive laws, causing the space for citizen involvement in governance to shrink continously
  • A state machinery which violates human rights to keep the ruling party in power
  • The economic meltdown which the government is responsible for, with 15.000 % inflation, over 80 % unemployment and severe shortages of food, fuel and other consumer goods.

The future of Africa must not tolerate dictatorships! It must be people-centered and respect human dignity, freedom of expression and freedom of association!

From a future partnership between Europe and Africa, we expect support of democratic governance. We appeal to the participants of the summit to make this issue the focal point on the agenda.

Zimbabwe is in turmoil. Zimbabwe needs our prayers. Zimbabwe needs

  • an end to state-sponsored violence and corruption
  • political stability, open dialogue and a democratic society
  • truth, justice, peace and reconciliation
  • free and fair elections on the basis of a just constitution
  • food and economic prosperity for all

The Zimbabwe Network is a German solidarity organization, founded 25 years ago to support the new Zimbabwe. In April 2007 on the occasion of the Independence Day we demonstrated in Berlin and demanded "Mugabe Step down! Make Way for Democracy!"
