The Friends of Zimbabwe are calling for the reconstitution of human rights and democracy

Danke fuer die Fotos an Steffen Freiling, Berlin Berlin. On April 18, 1980 Zimbabwe could finally celebrate independence. After 100 years of colonialism and fifteen years of liberation struggle this new era raised many dem expectations and hopes. Today 27 years later nothing much is left to celebrate. The economy is crumbling. The country is facing serious poverty. State repression and violence are the order of the day and any democratic opposition is oppressed. Robert Mugabe, the former symbol of hope for all of Southern Africa, extended his power and apparatus fighting or his political opponents with an ever increasing scrupulous brutality.

That is why the Zimbabwe Netzwerk (e.V.) used the upcoming independence day for a national day of action in Berlin, Germany. The slogan was save Zimbabwe. A huge balloon depicting a cartoon of the dictator was carried from Berlin Brandenburg Gate to Potsdamer Square in the city centre of the German capital. People participating are highly engaged people who had been working as teachers, as medical doctors and development workers in this Southern African country. They had actively supported the development of the post colonial state in the 1980s. They were calling for an immediate reintroduction of human rights and democracy in Zimbabwe and a called on Robert Mugabe personally to step down.

The Zimbabwean Catholic Bishops conference and others had called for a day of prayer on this very Saturday. Churches, the Christian Alliance and others had met in Bulawayo supported by Malawian, South African and other church leaders joining them for a prayer service.

Although the European Union with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the lead has increased sanctions in order to press for the compliance with human rights brutal attacks against members of the opposition still continue.
